Figures for 6 adult ducks
| Figure | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor space | 30 sq ft | 6 × 5 sq ft per adult duck (eXtension). |
| Indoor minimum | 18 sq ft | 6 × 3 sq ft. Penn State Extension and Maryland Extension list ducks at 3 sq ft inside. This is the table minimum, not a reason to ignore the 5 sq ft line. |
| Run minimum | 90 sq ft | 6 × 15 sq ft. Penn State Extension and Maryland Extension list ducks at 15 sq ft of run. |
| eXtension outdoor figure | none published | eXtension gives no specific outdoor number and says the larger the run, the better. |
| Droppings | more than 90% moisture | eXtension on waterfowl droppings. |
Six ducks are not six hens. Hen pages on this site use 4 sq ft indoors, which sits inside the eXtension 3-4 sq ft range and the Minnesota Extension 3 to 5 sq ft range, and 10 sq ft of run from eXtension. Duck rates in this set are the 5 sq ft indoor figure from eXtension and the 3 and 15 sq ft minimums from Penn State Extension and Maryland Extension. The hen run is not a duck figure.
Moisture is the part the square footage does not say by itself. eXtension puts waterfowl droppings above 90% moisture, so a 30 sq ft house still has a wet floor to plan for. The same paragraph says that if the climate does not allow year-round outdoor use, the interior space requirement increases, and it does not say by how many feet. Geese are out of scope here: eXtension puts them at about 3 times the duck allowance.
How to size it
Multiply the published per-duck figures. Do not borrow a chicken roost length; these sources do not give ducks a perch allowance.
- Indoor, eXtension. 6 × 5 = 30 sq ft (eXtension).
- Indoor minimum. 6 × 3 = 18 sq ft (Penn State Extension, Maryland Extension).
- Run minimum. 6 × 15 = 90 sq ft (Penn State Extension, Maryland Extension). eXtension still says the larger the run, the better, and does not cap that advice with a second number.
- Example footprint. 30 sq ft is 5 × 6 ft. 90 sq ft is 6 × 15 ft.

FAQ
How big should a duck house be for 6 ducks?
eXtension lists 5 sq ft indoors per adult duck, so 6 ducks need 30 sq ft. Penn State and Maryland list a lower indoor minimum of 3 sq ft, which is 18 sq ft for 6, and 15 sq ft of run, which is 90 sq ft.
How big should the outdoor run be for 6 ducks?
Penn State and Maryland list 15 sq ft of run per duck, so 6 times 15 is 90 sq ft. eXtension does not give a specific outdoor figure and says the larger the run, the better.
Why does duck housing stay wet?
eXtension says waterfowl droppings are more than 90 percent moisture. That is a floor and bedding problem on top of the square footage. The same source gives geese about 3 times the duck allowance, which this page does not apply to ducks.
What footprint is 30 sq ft?
A 5 by 6 ft floor is 30 sq ft. A 6 by 15 ft run is 90 sq ft. Those are examples of the products, not required shapes.
