Worked turkey space
| Turkeys | Indoors | Outdoors | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 sq ft | 20 sq ft | eXtension minimum per turkey. |
| 2 | 12 sq ft | 40 sq ft | 2 × 6 and 2 × 20 (eXtension). |
| 4 | 24 sq ft | 80 sq ft | 4 × 6 and 4 × 20 (eXtension). |
| 6 | 36 sq ft | 120 sq ft | 6 × 6 and 6 × 20 (eXtension). |
These three flock sizes are the same two rates, not three different standards. Indoor space is the bird count times 6, and outdoor space is the bird count times 20. eXtension calls both figures minimums. This page does not borrow a chicken indoor rate. Only the turkey line is multiplied.
Two limits sit beside the table and do not change the arithmetic. If the climate does not allow year-round outdoor use, eXtension says the interior requirement increases, without a second number to multiply. Too little space, the same source says, leads to pecking and cannibalism. There is no turkey roost length, nest count, or feed rate in this source set, so this page does not add them.
How to size it
Pick the head count, multiply once for the house and once for the yard, then check the product against a rectangle.
- Per bird. 6 sq ft indoors and 20 sq ft outdoors (eXtension).
- Two turkeys. 2 × 6 = 12 sq ft indoors and 2 × 20 = 40 sq ft outdoors. A 3 × 4 ft floor is 12 sq ft. A 5 × 8 ft yard is 40 sq ft.
- Four turkeys. 4 × 6 = 24 sq ft indoors and 4 × 20 = 80 sq ft outdoors. A 4 × 6 ft floor is 24 sq ft. An 8 × 10 ft yard is 80 sq ft.
- Six turkeys. 6 × 6 = 36 sq ft indoors and 6 × 20 = 120 sq ft outdoors. A 6 × 6 ft floor is 36 sq ft. A 10 × 12 ft yard is 120 sq ft.

FAQ
How much space do turkeys need?
eXtension lists a minimum of 6 sq ft indoors and 20 sq ft outdoors per turkey. Two turkeys are 12 sq ft inside and 40 sq ft outside. Four are 24 and 80. Six are 36 and 120.
How much space do 4 turkeys need?
4 times 6 sq ft is 24 sq ft indoors. 4 times 20 sq ft is 80 sq ft outdoors. Both rates are the eXtension minimums.
Is there a smaller outdoor number for turkeys?
eXtension publishes 20 sq ft outdoors per turkey and does not print a second, smaller outdoor allowance in this set of figures. The indoor number is 6 sq ft.
What if turkeys cannot go outside all year?
eXtension says that if the climate does not allow year-round outdoor use, the interior space requirement increases. It does not give a larger replacement for the 6 sq ft, so this page does not invent one. The same source says too little space leads to pecking and cannibalism.
