ChickenCoopCalc

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Last updated: October 6, 2026

How the calculator works

The calculator applies the rates named on the homepage in your browser. Standard birds use 4 sq ft and 10 sq ft, inside the published 3–4 and 10 figures. Bantam 2 and 8, and one nest per 3 hens, are tighter than the Penn State, Maryland, and Utah tables. Feed uses the quarter-pound figure from Alabama and Kentucky Extension. It is a planning estimate, not a measured result.

You enter a bird count and, where the page asks, a size class or another listed input. The page multiplies that count by the rate above and shows coop square feet, run square feet, nesting boxes, or feed. Amazon links on this site are affiliate links; they do not change the math.

Where the numbers come from

Housing and feed rates are the figures already linked from the homepage and the flock-size page:

The breed chart copies values exactly as published. Every row links its source document. The access date on that page is October 6, 2026. A missing value says "not listed". Nothing in the chart is estimated. Large-fowl weights are from University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, Chicken Breeds & Varieties (A2880). Bantam rows use these Livestock Conservancy pages:

How pages are written

Page text is drafted with AI agents (Cursor and local models) from those sources. Formulas are checked against the cited sources. Built and owned by Jeremy Panasuk, New Auburn, WI.

Affiliate policy

Amazon links use the Associates tag generatorsi0d-20. The disclosure sits before the first affiliate link on the page. Those links never change calculator output. This site does not sell paid placements.
